The magic of the Zäpfle

Description

A uniquely fresh and tangy German Pilsner, direct from the Rothaus brewery.

The famous German beer Rothaus Pils is known as Rothaus Tannenzäpfle in this smaller 330ml (33cl) bottle. It's the same beer, but the name and size of the bottle has a huge significance in the beer world (see 'Did You Know?').

Made with the purest, softest spring water from protected sources in the beautiful Black Forest mountain region of South West Germany, the best aromatic hops from Tettnang and Hallertau as well as local summer barley malt.

Considered by many to be the world's best pilsner beer.

*Red plastic Rothaus crate not included. Bottles shipped in protective and recyclable cardboard packaging.

Tasting Notes

“Truly a standard in Pils production. The perfect balance between playful southern German sweetness and a clear bitter northern German taste.” - Oliver Wesseloh (World champion beer sommelier)

Appearance: Very fine, long-lasting, bright white head. Nice, clear light gold.

Aroma: The nose registers a fresh Alpine meadow. Very fresh, invigorating aroma. Quite subtle in the background: gentle notes of grains and yeast.

Flavour: Starts with a quite lean body that becomes almost creamy thanks to its good effervescence. Very light notes of malt and caramel come through that maintain a balance with the noticeable, but never overwhelming bitterness.

The taste gets thinner and fresher toward the end. The freshly mowed meadow comes through again and a slight bitterness pops up to say: I’m still here, too. A subtle bitter aftertaste, but never overwhelming or scratchy.

Special aspect: The fine-tuned compilation of aromatic hops and local malt from spring barley lend the Pilsner its uniquely zesty and fresh flavour.

Did You Know?

Known as Rothaus Pils in 500ml (50cl) bottles and Rothaus Tannenzäpfle in the smaller 330ml (33cl) bottles. Also available in a 5 litre mini keg.

Prior to the 330ml (33cl) bottle, beer was generally sold in 700ml (70cl) or 1L bottles. The introduction of the Rothaus Tannenzäpfle 330ml (33cl) in 1956 led to the global acceptance of beer being served in smaller bottles.

Often shortened to 'Zäpfle', meaning 'fir cones', Rothaus Pils (Rothaus Tannenzäpfle) is named after the pine trees of the Black Forest in South West Germany, where the Rothaus Brewery is located. Each bottle in the 330ml (33cl) Zäpfle range features seven fir cones on the label and a distinctive neck foil wrap (which is also said to resemble fir cones).

Tannen: Fir Tree. Zäpfle: Little Fir Cone. Together this becomes: ‘Fir cone from the tree’.
