In 2012, Jeff Maisel, fourth-generation owner of the prestigious Maisel Brewery, launched Maisel & Friends with the help of some of his closest friends - positioning them as trailblazers in Germany's luxury and craft beer scene.

Maisel & Friends represents a bold approach to craft brewing, producing delicious beers with a deep-rooted passion for the art of brewing. Their mission is to further elevate beer’s status in German culture by encouraging people to explore the vast potential of beer flavours and aromas. Always adhering to the Reinheitsgebot (German Beer Purity Law of 1516), their creations showcase how diverse and complex beer can be, using only four ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast.

Visitors to the Maisel & Friends Brewery in Bayreuth, Upper Franconia, can even witness the brewing of their favourite Maisel & Friends beers through the glass wall that separates the brewing workshop from the Liebesbier (Love Beer) restaurant, offering a unique, immersive beer experience. Trust us, it’s well worth a visit.

With beer composed of around 90% water, Maisel & Friends are fortunate to source theirs from the pristine Fichtel Mountains; extending from the valley of the Red Main River in northeastern Bavaria to the Karlovy Vary Region in the western Czech Republic. With over 10,000 natural springs to choose from, the water from this region is exceptionally pure, requiring no desalination or descaling - an advantage many brewers can only dream of.

Their selected soft, crystal-clear water is the perfect foundation for Maisel & Friends’ exceptional beers, delivering unmatched quality to your glass - and tastebuds!

Malt, a key ingredient in beer, begins as a cereal grain that is carefully germinated and then dried (or kilned) at just the right moment. This process creates proteins that yeast later breaks down during fermentation.

Malt fuels the brewing process and determines a beer’s colour, alcohol content, and signature flavour. At Maisel & Friends, a variety of malts are selected to craft different beer styles. Depending on the combination, the result can range from light and crisp to rich and malty, offering limitless possibilities for creative brewing.

Hops provide the delicate bitterness and unique aroma that define a beer’s flavour. Maisel & Friends source their hops primarily from Bavaria’s famed Hallertau region, as well as from Spalt and Hersbruck in Franconia. For some of their specialities, they also source hops from the U.S. and Australia. Every year during harvest, they visit hop farmer and friend Markus Eckert in Hersbruck, ensuring they source the freshest and finest hops for their brews.

Yeast is the unsung hero of brewing, transforming malt sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide through fermentation. When added to the mash, yeast kick-starts the process, forming a thick layer of foam on top of the fermenting wort.

Maisel & Friends guard their proprietary yeast strains with care, as they are essential to the signature character of their beers. For special brews, they occasionally collaborate with fellow brewers, using unique yeast strains to experiment with new beer styles and flavours.

These four ingredients - water, malt, hops, and yeast - form the heart and soul of Maisel & Friends’ innovative, flavourful beers.
