Valentine’s Day, back in the day

Sometimes, it’s hard to remember that Valentine’s Day used to be about telling someone that you liked them as a secret - and those of a certain age will remember hoping for (or fearing!) receiving cards at school from secret admirers.

It certainly wasn’t unusual for parents to give their children a Valentine’s Day card, which always felt slightly uncomfortable but, fortunately, those days now seem to be over.

Valentine’s Day, today

Today, it’s turned into something different. Try getting a table at Pizza Express on February 14th and, if you’re there, finding anything other than slightly awkward couples realising that maybe this isn’t the pinnacle of their romantic lives!

For many, it’s actually a good day to acknowledge being single. Maybe even happily single as being part of the Valentine’s Day club doesn’t appeal to everyone.
