March is coming soon and, if you were in Germany, this would mean the exciting arrival of fresh Märzen beer (pronounced ‘mare-tsen’). The German word for the month of March is März, so asking for a Märzen beer is like asking for a ‘Marchie’ over here. We encourage you to try this at your local Rothaus shop/bar and see how they react.
So, what is a Märzen beer and why is it traditionally brewed in March?
Märzen, or Märzenbier, was traditionally brewed in the depths of winter to utilise naturally forming ice to cool the beer. The latest month brewers could produce a Märzen beer would be March (März).
Today, Rothaus brew Märzen beer all year round by utilising the -2° caverns they have created, especially for this purpose, within the granite mountain their brewery is built upon.
What are the ingredients of Rothaus Märzen?
Regional barley malt, soft brewing water, and the best aromatic hops from the Tettnang and Hallertau regions characterise the full-bodied taste of Rothaus Märzen.
How does Märzen beer compare to Pilsner beer?
Like Rothaus Pils, Rothaus Märzen is a smooth, easy drinking lager held in very high regard by German beer connoisseurs. Due to it’s higher ABV, malty bite and deliciously creamy carbonation, fans of Rothaus Pils really should try Rothaus Marzen (if they haven’t already!). And there’s no better month to do so than March (or Oktober, but that’s another story).
