Located in the Upper Franconian city of Bayreuth, this family-run brewery was founded in 1887 by brothers Hans and Eberhardt Maisel and is currently overseen by their fourth-generation descendant, Jeff Maisel.
In Germany, pubs and inns serving Maisel’s Weisse Original display the ‘Brewer’s Star’ in their signage, letting thirsty guests know that they’ll find wholesome beer at their establishment.
Maisel’s Weisse Original secured the title of World Champion at the 2018 World Beer Awards and was named ‘World’s Best Wheat Beer, Bavarian Hefeweiss’. In 2022, the wheat beer was awarded bronze in the same competition. It also won bronze at the Brussels Beer Challenge in 2019.
In the 1980s, more and more people began to enjoy wheat beers in Germany, which ultimately led to a new, unfiltered hefeweizen being offered alongside the crystal clear, Kristall yeast-free version. This not only fuelled the nationwide weissbier trend, but it would also become Maisel’s best-selling beer. However, it went through a few name changes, and ‘Maisel’s Hefe-Weissbier’ became ‘Maisel’s Weisse’ and is now known as ‘Maisel’s Weisse Original’
